Well known for the crucial role it has played in a wide range of industries including glass making, flour milling and steel production, Rotherham is a historic minster town located in South Yorkshire. Recent regeneration to create new green spaces within the town centre, development of the market square and a multi-million pound leisure facility mean this previously overlooked area is quickly becoming more sought after.
Currently, house prices remain relatively affordable, with the average sale price over the last year coming in at £208,588. Considerably less than South Yorkshire overall, and popular local hotspots Cawthorne and Dore in particular. As well as a bustling town centre and wealth of amenities, Rotherham is part of the Sheffield green belt which preserves rural spaces and the countryside, meaning walks, nature trails and stunning parks are right on the doorstep.
Transport
Rotherham benefits from being located just 8 miles from Sheffield and 30 miles from Leeds, which means the town has good transport links within the Yorkshire area and further afield to the rest of the UK. Rotherham Central train station is located in the middle of the town, with regular departures via Trans Pennine Express to Sheffield taking just 14 minutes and services to Manchester in 90 minutes.
There’s also the well-used bus interchange which is serviced by both First Bus and Stagecoach, connecting Rotherham to nearby towns and villages across the South Yorkshire area. The M1 is just a ten-minute drive from the town too, strategically linking Rotherham to the rest of the country via the M18 and the A630.
Schools and Education
For parents of school aged children, Rotherham’s wide selection of schools has something to suit everyone’s needs and the town is particularly recognised for its choice of SEND schools. There are three in the area, all rated either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. Kelford School is an all through school with a dedicated 16-19 centre which focuses on vocational and life skills. Newman School and Abbey School also cater for all ages and provide specialist education and care.
Primary schools in the area also come highly recommended, with several options in the town including Thornhill Primary School, Broom Valley Community School, Eastwood Village Primary School and Canklow Woods Primary School.
For those moving into secondary school, pupils are also spoilt for choice with several high performing schools in the area getting great exam results. Some of these include Clifton Community School, Wingfield Academy, Winterhill School and Brinsworth Academy which also offers sixth form places. There are two main colleges in the town as well, Thomas Rotherham College and Rotherham College, for students going into further education.
Leisure and Amenities
Residents of Rotherham are spoilt for choice in terms of leisure activities and amenities located within and near to the town.
For those who are looking for nightlife, the area around Westgate is bursting with pubs, bars, and clubs. Elliot’s Bar is well known for its retro tunes as well as games such as Twister and Giant Jenga and clubbers flock to Renoirs every weekend, a late-night venue which stays open until 5am. Also located on Westgate is the Cutler’s Arms, a traditional local which hosts live music and the The Riverside which does great pub grub.
Rotherham’s proximity to Meadowhall and Sheffield city centre means mainstream shops are easily accessible but not predominantly located in the centre of Rotherham, leaving the independent shops to thrive there. You’ll find independent delis, bakeries, clothing, homeware shops and bustling local markets in the town.
If you’re looking for something a little different, Rotherham is also home to Magna Science Adventure, an educational and fun day out for all the family where children can get hands-on while learning about the four elements. Housed in the former Templeborough steelworks, Magna is full of interactive exhibits and unforgettable experiences.
Culture vultures will be pleased to know that Rotherham Civic Centre puts on theatre shows and productions all year round including an annual pantomime, live music, comedy, and entertainment. The new Forge Island leisure complex also has plenty on offer, including a multiplex cinema, hotel, mall, and dining hall.
