Deep in the heart of Devon, the historic city of Exeter came to prominence in Roman times and remains the county town of Devon. Direct rail connections to London, Bristol, Cornwall, Birmingham and beyond, plus an airport voted the \u201cHappiest in the World<\/a>\u201d, make Exeter a key regional hub and gateway to the South West. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quaint by city standards with less than 150,000 residents, the city boasts a rich history, buzzing student population and scenic, rolling hills on the doorstep. Add to this an impressive array of high street shops, independent retailers, picture postcard Jurassic coast beaches and stunning Dartmoor National Park<\/a> within half an hour and you can see why Exeter is a (compact) force to be reckoned with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exeter is well connected by road, rail and air (even the broadband is superfast<\/a>!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city is served by three main train stations, Exeter St David\u2019s, Exeter Central and Exeter St Thomas. Exeter St David\u2019s connects the city with London (in two hours), Plymouth (in less than an hour), Penzance (in 3 hours) and the North. As the name suggests, Exeter Central is right in the heart of the city and provides connections to local towns like Exmouth, Lympstone and Topsham, Barnstaple in the north and Paignton in the south plus additional services to London Paddington and Waterloo. Suburban Exeter St Thomas is the city\u2019s smallest station, running services to Paignton and Exmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located near the M5, the rest of the UK is easily accessible from Exeter by car (although you will need to be patient during bank holidays and the summer break!). The A377 also provides a quick link to North Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or leave the car at home, since most local amenities in this compact city are only a short walk away and Exeter is well served by public transport<\/a> with a number of local and county-wide bus routes and a park and ride service<\/a> available.  The city is also part of the National Cycle Network<\/a> route 2, which meanders from St Austell in Cornwall all the way to Dover in Kent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the city, Exeter\u2019s \u2018happy<\/a>\u2019 airport is small but perfectly formed. 14 minutes from the city centre, you can fly to London, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and many international destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A number of big employers have also seen the appeal of this south west hub, basing themselves in and around the city and the nearby Marsh Barton Trading Estate<\/a>, Exeter Science Park<\/a> and Exeter Business Park<\/a>. Even Swedish powerhouse Ikea has pulled up a pew (flat pack, naturally!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to education, Exeter delivers. There are 36 local primary schools<\/a> and 27% of those assessed by Ofsted have been rated as outstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St Peter\u2019s Church of England Aided School<\/a>, Exeter College<\/a> and Exeter Mathematics School<\/a> are all highly rated secondary schools and colleges in Exeter. The city is also served by a number of highly rated independent primary and secondary schools such as, Exeter School<\/a>, Bramdean School<\/a> and the Maynard School<\/a>, one of the leading girl\u2019s schools in the UK. Barley Lane School<\/a> for boys and Southbrook School<\/a> offer a special educational needs curriculum for ages 11 to 16 and the Ellen Tinkham School<\/a> accepts children from 3 to 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of further education, the University of Exeter<\/a> is ranked 15th<\/sup> in the UK and in the top 150 universities worldwide and offers a range of highly rated undergraduate and post graduate courses and research facilities. The University of Plymouth<\/a> is also less than an hour from Exeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exeter\u2019s busy, compact town centre has a lot to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head to the High Street for retailers such as Apple, John Lewis, Debenhams, Topshop and the Princesshay<\/a> and Guildhall<\/a> shopping centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gandy Street offers<\/a> an impressive array of quirky and independent retailers such as Chococo<\/a>, My Ex Wardrobe<\/a> and The Recycled Candle Shop Company<\/a>. Magdalen Road defends its reputation as one of the 10 coolest shopping destinations in the world<\/a>, with an exciting, eclectic mix of independent retailers, delis and grocers such as Leela<\/a>, The Grocer on the Green<\/a>, Nourish Zero Waste<\/a> and Bon Gout<\/a> with a major focus on ethical produce and sustainability.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devon is a real foodie hotspot<\/a> and Exeter doesn\u2019t disappoint on this front. Whilst there are all the chain restaurants you would expect such as Nando\u2019s, Wagamamas, Byron Burger and Comptoir Libanais, give some of the local independents a try and you won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a relaxed, ethical and extremely delicious taste of Thailand grab takeout (100% recyclable of course) from student favourite Red Panda<\/a> and soak up the rays on the Cathedral Green. If fine dining is your thing, head to award-winning @Angela\u2019s<\/a>, grab an exceptional coffee and delicious cakes and light bites at local\u2019s favourite the Exploding Bakery<\/a> and enjoy an impressive Sunday lunch at The Fat Pig<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being heavily bombed during the Second World War, thankfully there is still a rich history to explore in Exeter, non-more so than the 14th<\/sup> century Gothic Cathedral<\/a> which sits proudly in the middle of the city. History enthusiasts should also head to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery<\/a> (known locally as the more catchy \u201cRAMM\u201d!), whose exhibitions and events celebrate both local and worldwide history and culture through the ages. The city is also littered with relics to explore from a bygone age, such as the underground passages<\/a>, Rougemont Castle<\/a> and the Medieval Exe Bridge<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heading further afield? Check out nearby Powderham Castle<\/a>, one of few such estates in the UK to remain privately owned, or the Killerton Estate<\/a>, lovingly maintained by the National Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exeter is also known for its peaceful, green outdoor spaces<\/a>. But when you tire of the city, the sandy beaches of Jurassic Coast hotspots Exmouth, Sidmouth and the peaceful pebbles of picturesque Budleigh Salterton are all within half an hour\u2019s drive and the best of Devon\u2019s countryside is on Exeter\u2019s doorstep. The 3,500 acre Haldon Forest<\/a> is just 15 minutes from the city and offers walking, cycling and running trails, camping yurts for hire and a Go Ape aerial walkway.

What\u2019s on? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Life is never boring in this vibrant city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exeter has a huge range of local markets<\/a> on offer year-round offering everything from local produce<\/a>, crafts<\/a> and vegan traders<\/a> to festive food and gifts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city also loves a festival. Unsurprisingly for the foodie South West, food and drink play a large part at events like the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink<\/a>, Exeter Street Food Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music is also a big priority in Exeter, with famous son Chris Martin, Exeter University alum Thom Yorke (of Radiohead fame) and Devon locals Muse playing many an early gig in the city. Get your groove on at the eponymous Exeter Festival<\/a>, retro Lets Rock Exeter<\/a> or dance music favourite Lockdown Festival<\/a> and enjoy dance and performing arts at family friendly Exeter Respect Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Westpoint<\/a>, the South West\u2019s largest entertainment venue, offers the biggies like the Devon County Show<\/a> and Spree South West<\/a> plus numerous exhibitions and fairs. Culture vultures should check out \u201cmulti-artform venue\u201d The Exeter Phoenix<\/a> and the Barnfield Theatre<\/a> for drama, comedy and regional and international theatre. Sports fans will enjoy Sandy Park, home to Exeter\u2019s famed local rugby team The Chiefs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exeter regularly receives accolades for quality of life<\/a> and a thriving lifestyle<\/a>. Reassuringly for current and prospective students, the Complete University Guide has also voted Exeter the 6th<\/sup> most safe university town<\/a> in England and Wales in a recent review. However, despite low crime rates, the city is not immune to crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019 particularly, the police, council and other outreach services sought to address the levels of antisocial behaviour, violence and theft in the town centre resulting primarily from drinking and drugs dependences.
