The area was also home to a teenage Elizabeth Tudor, later Queen Elizabeth I, and a number of local buildings still date back to the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Cheshunt still has a fairly modest population of around 50,000. But whilst property prices are competitive for the commuter belt, an influx of North Londoners has seen prices in the area increase by over 50% since the Noughties. With a \u00a3500m retail, residential and leisure development also in the pipeline, you might not want to wait too long to hang up your hat in Cheshunt!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheshunt\u2019s proximity to London makes it an excellent location for commuters. The town itself is 17 miles north of central London, which is just over an hour away by car. However, you can take a direct train or London Overground service from Cheshunt to London Liverpool Street in around 25 minutes and there are also direct train services available to Cambridge and Hertfordshire. Annual season ticket prices are also competitive in comparison to other commuter belt areas.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A1 motorway offers drivers easy access to both London and the rest of the UK and London\u2019s M25 is a short hop, skip and a jump away.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of air travel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heathrow.com\/\">London Heathrow<\/a> is just over 50 minutes away on the M25, or an hour and a half by public transport. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoncityairport.com\/\">London City airport<\/a> is slightly closer, taking around 40 minutes on the M25 and just over 50 minutes via public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheshunt is also a cyclist\u2019s dream. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikemap.net\/en\/l\/2653232\/\">With a number of beautiful cycling routes<\/a>, you\u2019ll never be bored and there are plenty of cycling clubs in the area, too. There are also bus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arrivabus.co.uk\/locations\/herts-and-essex\">routes<\/a> running throughout the town and to outlying areas such as Waltham Cross and Hertford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearest stations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greateranglia.co.uk\/travel-information\/station-information\/chn\">Cheshunt<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/waltham-cross\">Waltham<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/theobalds-grove\">Theobalds Grove<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hertfordshire is well known for a great selection of schools. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hertfordshire.gov.uk\/services\/schools-and-education\/schools-and-education.aspx\">32 primary schools<\/a> in and around Cheshunt in particular, with 4 achieving an \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating from Ofsted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of secondary education, there are 8 secondary schools nearby including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goffs.herts.sch.uk\/\">Goffs Academy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broxbourne.herts.sch.uk\/\">The Broxbourne School<\/a> which have been rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted. However, a little further afield are<a href=\"http:\/\/chauncyschool.com\/\"> The Chauncy School<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/damealiceowens.herts.sch.uk\/\"> Dame Alice Owen\u2019s School<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/amwell.herts.sch.uk\/\"> Amwell View School and Specialist Sports College<\/a> for children with severe learning difficulties, all of which have been rated \u2018outstanding\u2019.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of higher education, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herts.ac.uk\/\">University of Hertfordshire<\/a> is 25 minutes away, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beds.ac.uk\/\">University of Bedfordshire<\/a> is less than 40 minutes\u2019 drive and world-renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/\">Cambridge University<\/a> is less than an hour away, whilst many of the top UK universities can be found a short train journey away in London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New parents can socialise with other local parents in Cheshunt at a variety of baby and toddler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happity.co.uk\/baby-toddler-classes?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;location=cheshunt&amp;age=&amp;weekday=&amp;commit=Go%21\">groups and classes<\/a> which include music, gymnastics and sensory sessions to name but a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheshunt certainly offers the best of both worlds in terms of<strong> <\/strong>stunning countryside on the doorstep and the convenience of London less than 25 minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beautiful lakes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitleevalley.org.uk\/river-lee-country-park\">River Lee Country Park<\/a> are popular with anglers and excellent for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.better.org.uk\/leisure-centre\/lee-valley\/white-water-centre\">water sports activities<\/a> like canoeing, sailing and white-water-rafting. There are also plenty of pushchair and trike friendly walks, cycle paths and play areas in the park for the younger members of the family and activities like Scouts and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hymb.com\/\">Herts Young Mariners Base<\/a> to keep older children entertained. The stunning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/hertfordshires-national-nature-reserve\/hertfordshires-national-nature-reserve\">Broxbourne Wood National Nature Reserve<\/a> is also right on the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For indoor pursuits, look no further than the <a href=\"https:\/\/bebroxbourne.co.uk\/centres\/laura-trott\/\">Laura Trott Leisure Centre<\/a> \u2013 named after Britain\u2019s most successful female Olympian \u2013 which offers swimming, gym, outdoor pitches and spa facilities alongside various sports clubs, a cr\u00e8che and children\u2019s activities. Membership also gives you access to the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/bebroxbourne.co.uk\/centres\/john-warner\/\">John Warner Sports Centre<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of shopping, locals currently head to nearby village Goffs Oak for independent coffee shops and boutiques or Brookfield Shopping Centre for high street favourites like Next or Sports Direct. However, plans are in the works for a <a href=\"https:\/\/brookfieldriverside-consultation.co.uk\/\">\u00a3500m expansion<\/a> and &#8216;garden suburb&#8217;, with extensive new retail and leisure facilities including a cinema, restaurants and office space which are being billed as a \u2018new town centre\u2019. There are also 250 new residential properties planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The revamped Brookfield retail and leisure complex will see the slightly limited dining options in Cheshunt expand considerably. Of the existing fare, <a href=\"https:\/\/mahekindiancheshunt.co.uk\/\">Mahek<\/a> is a wonde rful Indian restaurant, serving highly rated dishes which include vegetarian and vegan options and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmullens.co.uk\/bullshead\">The Bull\u2019s Head<\/a> in nearby Turnford, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmullens.co.uk\/oldanchor\">The Old Anchor<\/a> and child friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmullens.co.uk\/crocodile\">The Crocodile<\/a> are all popular with locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheshunt has a great range of local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/d\/united-kingdom--hertfordshire\/cheshunt\/\">events<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DaVKTY-OFTW\/\">Cheshunt Beer and Gin Festival<\/a> takes place annually at Halsey Hall and live music events from garage to golden oldies take place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/d\/united-kingdom--cheshunt\/music--festivals\/\">local towns and villages<\/a> like Ware and Potters Bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sports fans can also support local sides <a href=\"https:\/\/cheshuntfc.com\/\">Cheshunt Football Club<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheshuntrugby.co.uk\/\">Cheshunt Rugby Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety and crime<\/strong><br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a highly rated commuter town, safety is one of the main reasons for Cheshunt\u2019s popularity amongst ex-Londoners.
