Seen as Guildford and Leatherhead\u2019s quieter cousin, the historic market town of Dorking in Surrey is increasingly popular with London commuters in search of their next step on the property ladder and retirees<\/a> in search of the good life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what does Dorking have to offer apart from stunning Surrey countryside, a charming, thriving town centre, excellent schools, period properties without the eye watering price tag and an easy commute to the city? Read on to find out more. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dorking\u2019s\ngreat rail, road and bus connections mean that even though you might feel as if\nyou are off the beaten track, you can access central London and surrounding\nareas exceedingly easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\ncan reach London Victoria<\/a> in an hour, London Waterloo<\/a> in around 50 minutes\nand London Bridge<\/a> in 55 minutes from Dorking Train Station<\/a>. Dorking\u2019s other two\ntrain stations, West Dorking<\/a> and Dorking Deepdene<\/a>, are on the North Downs Line<\/a> that runs from Reading\nto Redhill and you can get to Guilford in between 16-25 mins and Gatwick in\n24-28 minutes. There are also a number of regular bus services<\/a> in and around the town\nwhich encompass the wider county of Surrey. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Road wise, Dorking is on the A24 and A25, which means you can reach Guilford in 30 mins and the M25 in an impressive 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.\u00a0Dorking also has EV charging available in several council car parks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthose travelling further afield, both Gatwick Airport<\/a> and Heathrow Airport<\/a> are less than an hour away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorking is also a mecca for cycling enthusiasts with the most popular routes being the Dorking Circular via Heath Hill Route, the Box Hill<\/a> route which was made popular by the 2012 Olympics and the National Route 22 of the National Cycle Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorking\ntown centre is within walking distance from all 3 train stations, and there are\nplenty of routes in and around Dorking for walkers, runners and ramblers. The Box Stepping Stone\nWalk<\/a>\nis one of the favourites amongst locals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorking is an extremely sought-after area for\nfamilies due\nto its plenitude of good schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of primary schools, St Joseph\u2019s Catholics Primary School<\/a>, St Johns Church of England Primary School<\/a> and Powell Cordory Primary School<\/a> have all been rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted. St Pauls C of E Primary School<\/a> for ages 5-11 has received an \u201coutstanding\u201d rating from Ofsted and has an ethos of \u201cInspiring Learning, Nurturing Wholeness\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highly regarded secondary schools in Dorking include The Ashcombe<\/a> and The Priory C of E<\/a>. Both have been rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted. Box Hill School<\/a> is a popular independent school offering coeducational, boarding facilities and Epsom College<\/a> is a leading co-ed private school for ages 16-18. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nterms of further and higher education, East Surrey College<\/a> has a wide selection\nof full-time and part-time courses and Surrey University<\/a> offers a vast range of undergraduate and post\ngraduate courses from a vibrant, picturesque campus. Dorking residents also\nhave a number of highly rated London Universities<\/a> on their doorsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorking\nalso offers a range of socialising opportunities for babies and toddlers (and\ntheir parents!), with plenty of classes and activities<\/a> to choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dorking High Street loves an antique shop, most of which are on West Street<\/a>, the historic old quarter of the town. Chantecleer Antiques<\/a> and the Dorking Desk Shop<\/a> are some of the most popular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nopen-air St Martins Walk\nShopping Centre<\/a>\nhas a selection of independent shops, well-known names and an outdoor caf\u00e9 area\nand is also the destination for many of Dorking\u2019s main events, including the\nfarmers market and Christmas festivities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nit comes time to dust off the cobwebs, there are many stunning green spaces to\nvisit since Dorking is lucky enough to have the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty<\/a>, Jane Austen favourite\nBox Hill<\/a> and Leith Hill<\/a> (Surrey\u2019s \u201cMountain\u201d) all on the\ndoorstep.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can tackle the iconic stepping stones<\/a> at the River Mole, although be sure not to wear your best shoes as you may have a squelchy walk back to the car! Or, if you\u2019re feeling energetic, Leith Hill has stunning panoramic views, but it will take 2 hours of varying gradients to get to the top so do pace yourself! The trail passes through Leith Hill Place and scenic woodlands and you can opt to climb the 78 steps to the top of the majestic Leith Hill Tower<\/a> for an even more incredible view. You can also admire the mosaic of purples, greens and golds across the Devils Punch Bowl<\/a> where there are many footpaths to explore in shady woods and open heathland. You might even be lucky enough to spot some wild ponies on the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nfirm favourite for the younger members of the family is Meadow Bank Park<\/a> with open greenspaces,\nwildlife, soft play, caf\u00e9 and playground. A brilliant day out to really let off\nsome steam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food lovers are also spoilt for choice. Enjoy Mediterranean-inspired food at Roosters Kitchen and Arto, authentic Neapolitan pizza at Monte Forte, or Italian-inspired dishes at Rialto Social. Or stop for a bite to eat at the comically named locals favourite the Grumpy Mole<\/a> in nearby Brockham and the scenic Watermill Inn<\/a> overlooking Box Hill. For something a bit different, quirky Rykas Caf\u00e9<\/a> is run \u201cby bikers for bikers\u201d and is a favourite pit stop for cyclists, bikers and walkers. With plenty of pubs, caf\u00e9s and local producers nearby, Dorking is a great place to eat, drink and explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dorking is a popular spot for live music and entertainment, served up at the Dorking Halls<\/a> and a number of town centre pubs such as The Spotted Dog<\/a> and The Kings Arms<\/a>, with Screaming Blue Murder Comedy<\/a> a particularly popular feature.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local\u2019s\nfavourite Leith Hill Music Festival<\/a> has run for over 100\nyears and is not to be missed. It brings together groups of choirs for a series\nof competitions and concerts running over the course of 3 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sport is also a BIG focus in Dorking. Dorking RFC<\/a> have a huge following, as do the Dorking Swimming Team<\/a>, one of the top swimming teams in Surrey. The club is run from Dorking Sports Centre<\/a> which offers plenty of gym classes, facilities and clubs for all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For keen historians, the stately home and grounds of Polesden Lacey<\/a> are a must visit and the Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre<\/a> allows you to slip into a bygone era and admire many exhibitions, both permanent and temporary. They also run plenty of events and family activities throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expert wine tasters and nature lovers should head to Denbies Wine Estate<\/a>. The canopy of vineyards is magical, and the family-owned estate offers many seasonal activities<\/a>, most, of course, revolving around wine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One\nof the major selling points for homebuyers looking to Dorking is its quiet,\nsafe reputation and strong sense of community, with many locals having lived in\nthe area for a number of years. Particularly sought-after areas include Rose\nHill, North Holmwood, Park Copse and Dorking Rural West. Dorking as a whole has\nreassuringly low crime rates though and the county of Surrey has some of the\nlowest levels of recorded crime in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
