The small\nCornish town and parish of Saltash \u2013 known as \u201cEssa\u201d in Cornish<\/a> \u2013 is often referred to as the \u201cGateway\nto Cornwall\u201d thanks to its location on the west bank of the River Tamar\nopposite Plymouth on the east bank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst there\nhave been settlements in the area since the Roman inhabitation, a community\nsprung up locally around the first ferry crossing from Saltash to Plymouth\nwhich was introduced in the 11th<\/sup> century and ceased in 1961 with the\nopening of the Tamar Bridge.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saltash has an impressive four<\/em> areas of outstanding natural beauty on the doorstep \u2013 the Tamar Valley, Dartmoor National Park, the Rame Peninsula and the stunning South Devon AONB \u2013 and a scenic coastal location of its own to boot. Coupled with a strong sense of heritage and excellent commuter links to nearby Plymouth, plus easy connections to the rest of scenic Cornwall, it is easy to see why Saltash is frequently named one of the most desirable places to live in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For a small town, Saltash\nis home to a number of great transport links with some impressive road, rail\nand ferry connections.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For drivers, the A38 Devon Expressway which crosses the Tamar Bridge connects Saltash with central Plymouth in only 14 minutes. A toll<\/a> is payable for travelling eastbound from Saltash to Plymouth but not for the return journey. The town is within commutable distance from <\/strong>Tavistock and Okehampton (30 and 50 minutes away respectively), too. Saltash is also only around an hour\u2019s drive from Cornish capital Truro and hotspots St Austell, Padstow and Newquay. Penzance can be reached by car in under an hour and half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saltash Rail Station is on the Great Western Railway Line and offers direct services across the impressive Royal Albert Bridge (created by Isambard Kingdom Brunel) to Plymouth in a speedy 10 minutes, Totnes in around 40 minutes, Exeter in 1 hour 15 minutes, and London Paddington in 3.5 hours. There are also services in the other direction to St Austell in just over 45 minutes, Truro in just over an hour and Penzance in 1 hour 45 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saltash is also\nserved by a number of local bus\nroutes<\/a> such as the No.12\nbetween Plymouth and Bode, plus services to Bodmin, Launceston, Liskeard, Looe,\nand Polperro amongst others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To access Devon from the\nRame Peninsula there is a ferry service<\/a> between Torpoint and Devonport in Plymouth and\nthere are plenty of scenic cycle routes<\/a> locally for fans of two-wheels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
