With easy access to the breath-taking\nscenery of the Peak District National Park <\/a> and\nhistoric Sherwood Forest<\/a>, the East Midlands market town of\nWorksop is well-placed for those who love escaping to the great outdoors.\nWhat\u2019s more, Worksop\u2019s history is the stuff of Tourist Board dreams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing in the Domesday Book as Werchesope<\/a>, the town has several other claims to fame, including its location in the heart of Robin Hood country, and the fact it was once an important centre for growing liquorice. Worksop is also known as the Gateway to the Dukeries<\/a>, providing easy access to some of England\u2019s oldest and noblest estates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s more to Worksop than the stately\nhomes and lovely countryside that surround it, though. Add in the town\u2019s\nindustrial past, including coal mining and its aftermath, and it\u2019s clear that\nWorksop\u2019s diverse built environment, created by both affluence and toil, is a\nmajor part of the town\u2019s appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worksop\u2019s central location and historic patterns of development also mean the housing market offers good prospects for a range of buyers. \u00a0There\u2019s plenty to interest first-nesters, families, and down-sizers, all of whom will find a rare mix of urban and country properties in the area. The average house price locally is now just over \u00a3222,000, comfortably below the national average. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Worksop\u2019s central location means its railway station<\/a> <\/strong>offers excellent train links. The town is the terminus of Nottingham\u2019s Robin Hood Line<\/a>, and surely only a disgruntled Sheriff could fail to be charmed by the romance of that name? It is also on the Sheffield to Lincoln line, allowing easy access to the Lincolnshire countryside and coastline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worksop\u2019s proximity to the M1 means that Sheffield and Nottingham are both readily accessible by car as well as train. Sheffield Station<\/a> offers excellent regular services to Manchester (an hour and a quarter away), Birmingham, London, and the north and there\u2019s also a regular train service from Worksop to East Midlands Parkway<\/a> which links directly to East Midlands Airport<\/a>. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclists can enjoy some of the finest (and frequently flattest!) cycle routes in the country, including a dedicated cycle route from Nottingham to Worksop which includes sections of The Robin Hood Way<\/a>. It\u2019s also a great location for walkers and is said to have some of the Best Tea Shop Walks in Nottinghamshire<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The two Worksop Academies for 11 \u2013 18 year olds, Outwood Academy Portland<\/a> and Outwood Academy Valley<\/a>, have both been rated \u201coutstanding\u201d by Ofsted, as has Norbridge Academy<\/a> for 3 \u2013 11 year olds. Worksop\u2019s primary and junior schools hold \u201cgood\u201d ratings and independent Worksop College<\/a> offers both day and boarding facilities from pre-prep and nursery through to sixth form college. North Notts College<\/a> provides a diverse range of mainly vocational courses, from animal care to games animation. Several world class universities are also accessible to Worksop, including Sheffield<\/a>, Manchester<\/a> and Nottingham<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, shoppers can enjoy fresh produce and other wares at Worksop Market<\/a>, which received its royal charter in 1296 from Edward Longshanks (King Edward I) himself.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major regeneration<\/a> of the Priory Centre will provide Worksop with an all-singing, all-dancing retail and leisure space complete with a climbing wall, indoor adventure play area and a bowling alley, but for a big day out in the meantime, shoppers can head to nearby Sheffield, Nottingham, or Manchester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to eating out, as well as a good choice of international, vegan and vegetarian cuisines, such as that on offer at the Thai Tiger Restaurant and Bar<\/a>, Worksop excels at traditional pub fare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worksop also welcomes lovers of real ale<\/a>, however, you don\u2019t have to be a drinker to appreciate Worksop\u2019s plethora of picturesque and unusual pubs<\/a> such as the Unicorn<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chesterfield Canal<\/a> is another of Worksop\u2019s best-kept secrets\nthat the locals are happy to share. Beautiful scenery, amazing wildlife and\nsites of scientific interest provide the perfect backdrop for relaxing strolls\nat any time of day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of all the delights of the local Dukeries, lovely Clumber Park<\/a> is frequently cited as the best. Its proximity to Worksop means it is ideal for walks and picnics. The picnic theme is taken to professional level with the Festival of Food and Drink<\/a> at nearby Thoresby Park. Celebrity chefs are in attendance, and of course, food and drink sufficient to satisfy Friar Tuck and an entire band of merry men (and women). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two other major attractions could not be more diverse. The first, just ten minutes\u2019 drive from Worksop, is the awesome Creswell Crags Museum and Prehistoric Gorge,<\/a> which transports visitors back to the days of the Ice Age. The second is Mr Straw’s House<\/a> in Worksop itself, a National Trust property which previously belonged to the town grocer. From Ice Age cave bears and reindeer to an Edwardian tradesman\u2019s house is a giant step, but Worksop takes it in its quirky stride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither the arts nor sports are neglected in Worksop. Given the town\u2019s proximity to some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain, it\u2019s not surprising that a range of outdoor activities are on offer in the vicinity, from horse riding to extreme sports, among which surely axe throwing<\/a> must count? \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indoor sports including dancing, bowls, gymnastics, table tennis, snooker and indoor footie are available at the North Notts Community Arena<\/a>. The Arena also plays host to many other events, from fundraisers to pantos. Fans of theatre can also enjoy the performances of the Acorn Theatre<\/a> and its Young Theatre Company, members of a community group who perform and give workshops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Active Safer Neighbourhood Teams Worksop North<\/a> and Worksop South<\/a> work closely with the local community and there are also a number of local Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are Worksop\u2019s other real strengths to consider, too, such as access to beautiful countryside, a strong sense of tradition and community, and proximity to some of the finest redbrick universities in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n
