Founded by the Romans as \u2018<em>Londonium\u2019<\/em>\nover two thousand years ago, the southeast city on the River Thames has\ncontinued to grow in size and influence ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1965, the\nUK\u2019s capital city has been made up of 32 boroughs plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflondon.gov.uk\/about-us\">The\nCity of London<\/a> \u2013 a\ndistinct ceremonial county and local government district at the city\u2019s\nhistorical centre \u2013 which all fall under the administration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/\">Greater\nLondon Authority<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 12 inner boroughs\nof London are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/houses-for-sale\/camden-borough-north-west-london\">Camden<\/a>, <a tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\nconsider London\u2019s iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace, the Houses of\nParliament and the Tower of London, a plethora of outstanding amenities such as\nOxford Street, the theatres of the West End and the iconic Natural History\nMuseum, not to mention thousands of pubs, clubs and tempting eateries, an\nimpressive jobs market and excellent salaries, Johnson certainly has a point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although London\ncomes with a hefty price tag when it comes to buying a home (particularly in comparison\nto the UK\u2019s average house price of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/inflationandpriceindices\/bulletins\/housepriceindex\/september2021\">\u00a3270,000<\/a>), there are still some bargains to be\nhad should you have the budget. Indeed, the most affordable London Borough \u2013 Barking\nand Dagenham \u2013 had a not unreasonable average property price of \u00a3337,901 over\nthe last year and East London overall certainly offers more bang for your buck.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, could\nLondon be the city for you? Read on to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London offers some of the best transport links in the world, with various\noptions to get you where you want to go via road, rail, air and water courtesy\nof <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/\">Transport for London<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extensive London transport network includes <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/tube\/\">Underground<\/a> (tube), <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/london-overground\/\">Overground<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/dlr\/\">Dockland Light Railway<\/a> (DLR)\nservices not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/trams\/\">tram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/emirates-air-line\/\">cable car<\/a> and scenic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thamesclippers.com\/\">riverboat<\/a> options. Of course, one of the most popular modes\nof transport for Londoners is the iconic red London Bus, with 24-hour <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/buses\/\">bus routes<\/a> available across the city and beyond. There are\nalso an impressive 360 <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/tfl-rail\/\">train<\/a> stations sitting\nwithin the London Travelcard Zones. For <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/cycling\/\">cyclists<\/a>, there are plenty of dedicated cycle lanes and the\npopular Santander Cycle Hire scheme too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like most big cities, driving is not for the faint-hearted in London and\ncongestion charges and maximum speed limits of 20 miles per hour apply in many\ncentral boroughs. The M25 (also known as the London Orbital Motorway) surrounds\nGreater London and is one of the busiest in London. It connects the capital\nwith the M1, M3, M4, M26 and M40 amongst others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When travelling further afield, there are also six airports at your\ndisposal in and around London: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London\nStansted, London Luton, London City and London Southend in nearby Essex.\nPerhaps unsurprisingly, the city is said to have the busiest urban airspace in\nthe world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With hundreds of primary and secondary <a href=\"https:\/\/get-information-schools.service.gov.uk\/\">schools<\/a> in London, parents\nhave their pick when it comes to education. However, catchment areas can be\nstringent and places in the most popular schools hotly contested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to the best rated schools in the most affordable areas of\nLondon, the Borough of Newham came out on top in 2021 according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/most-affordable-london-borough-best-schools-newham-b939340.html\">Evening\nStandard<\/a>, with 35% of its schools being judged as \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted.\nRedbridge and Sutton also scored highly with 39% and 33% of the schools in\nthese boroughs achieving an \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also an extensive range of independent school options, including\nThomas\u2019s School Battersea,\nwhich is attended by Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and the highly\nregarded St Paul&#8217;s Girls School, Westminster School and North London Collegiate\nSchool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes\nto further education, City and Islington College, City of Westminster College,\nEaling, Hammersmith and West London College, the London Academy of Excellence\nand New City College all come highly recommended. London is also home to some\nof the most prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk\/league-tables\/rankings\/london\">universities<\/a> and medical schools in the world which welcome\nsome of the highest numbers of international students of any city globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London is certainly a 24-hour city, with plenty of amenities on offer for\nits on-the-go residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each borough has its own town centre facilities whether it comes to the opulent Kings Road in Chelsea, or the retail meccas Westfield in Shepherd\u2019s Bush and Stratford. Visits to Borough, Greenwich, Portobello Road, Brick\nLane and the Columbia Road Flower Market are a must at the very least. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/food-drink\">food scene<\/a> is constantly\nevolving with pop-up restaurants, street food stalls and Michelin stars all\nover the place. Bustling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/whats-it-like-to-live-in-islington\/\">Islington<\/a> has one of\nthe highest concentrations of restaurants and eateries in the UK and Brick Lane\nis the place to go for a good curry, but do a little research and you\u2019ll find\nsome excellent local eateries in every borough and some great pubs, clubs and\nentertainment venues to boot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its urban<strong> <\/strong>appeal, London is also home to a\nsurprising amount of green space. From central Hyde Park and Regents Park to Hampstead\nHeath in the northwest, Richmond Park and Clapham Common in the southwest,\nmajestic Greenwich Park and World Heritage Site in the southeast or the mighty 8000-acre\n<a href=\"https:\/\/eppingforestheritagetrust.org.uk\/about-the-forest\/\">Epping Forest<\/a> in the north\neast, if you are a fan of the great outdoors, London has you covered. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s on? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What isn\u2019t going on in London!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York may be the city that never sleeps but London is certainly the\ncity that never stops! Annual highlights include the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhcarnival.org\/\">Notting Hill Carnival<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bst-hydepark.com\/\">British Summer Time<\/a> festival in\nHyde Park and some of the most impressive New Year\u2019s Eve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlondon.com\/things-to-do\/whats-on\/new-years-eve\/things-to-do-on-new-years-eve-in-london\">celebrations<\/a> to be found\nin the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Head to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlondon.com\/things-to-do\/whats-on\/theatre\">West End<\/a> for the best\nin world theatre and for live entertainment you are spoilt for choice with big\nhitters like The Royal Albert Hall, The 02 and Brixton Academy. Smaller venues\nand events like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionchapel.org.uk\/\">Union Chapel<\/a> and Secret\nCinema are also extremely popular and culture vultures are spoilt for choice\nwhen it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlondon.com\/things-to-do\/sightseeing\/london-attraction\/museum\/free-museums-in-london\">museums<\/a>, galleries\nand creative spaces in the Big Smoke. The V&amp;A, the London Transport Museum\nand the Tate Modern are just a few that should definitely be on your list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London also plays host to iconic sporting grounds such as Twickenham and\nWembley, the home of English rugby and football respectively, plus popular\npremier league football teams Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs amongst\nmany others.
