Located in the East\nMidlands County of Leicestershire, the city of Leicester is one of the oldest\nin the UK, dating back to the Iron Age. With a rich history spanning the Roman,\nAnglo-Saxon and Viking eras, Leicester also rose to prominence in the\nIndustrial Revolution as a centre for textiles, footwear, and later heavy\nindustry. More recently, the body of King\nRichard III<\/a>, the last King of the House of York \u2013 who fought the House of\nLancaster in the long-running 15th<\/sup> century War of the Roses \u2013 was\ndiscovered buried under a carpark in the city. He has since been moved to a\nmore fitting resting place in Leicester Cathedral. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Leicester is\nfrequently named one of the best cities in the UK in which to live and work,\nbeating the likes of London, nearby Birmingham, and Nottingham amongst others.\nGreat schools, local amenities like the lively Cultural Quarter, the Highcross\nShopping Complex and various theatres, museums, and entertainment venues plus the\nNational Forest<\/a> on the doorstep\nall attract prospective homebuyers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s location\n40 odd miles northwest of Birmingham and around 28 miles south of Nottingham means\nthat Leicester is also extremely well connected by road and rail, with London just\nover an hour away by train. But perhaps the biggest draw to the area is\nproperty prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, the average house price in Leicester over\nthe last 12 months was a very reasonable \u00a3256,750. More affordable than the\nnational average and Leicestershire overall at \u00a3278,681 and offering a\nsignificant saving in comparison to nearby hotspots Newtown Linford (\u00a3632,250),\nSwithland (\u00a3619,000) and Old Dalby (\u00a3565,430). Leicester\u2019s ongoing Waterside\ndevelopment is also one to watch. Nearly 300 new homes will be created\nalongside a great range of leisure facilities as part of a \u00a3250 million\nrenovation project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its\ncentral location, Leicester is easily accessible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drivers have the\noption of the M1 from London to Leeds and York, the A46 for connections to the\nA1 and M6, the M42 to Worcestershire and a number of other major trunk roads at\ntheir disposal. Within the city there are 3 park and ride sites with buses\nrunning every 15 minutes and there is also a secure bike park available for\nfans of two wheels, plus a huge range of bus services<\/a> from Leicester\u2019s\ntwo main bus stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leicester\u2019s train\nstation<\/a> offers a range of regular rail services across the East Midlands\nand beyond via East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and the Midland Main Line.\nBirmingham can be reached in 50 minutes, Sheffield in an hour and Leeds around\n2 hours. London St Pancras can be reached in just over an hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For international\ntravellers, Birmingham International Airport<\/a> is 45\nminutes\u2019 drive and East Midlands Airport only 30 minutes away by road or rail.\nBoth of which fly to numerous domestic and international destinations.\nLeicester\u2019s own airport<\/a> offers\nprivate flight training and flying experiences for new and existing pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For Leicester\u2019s\nyounger residents, there is a high standard of education at primary\nand secondary level<\/a>, with the vast majority of schools receiving an\n\u2018outstanding\u2019 or \u2018good\u2019 rating from Ofsted at their last inspection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highly rated primary\nschools in the area include Rowlatts Hill Primary Academy, Christ the King\nCatholic Voluntary Academy, Northfield House Primary Academy and Whitehall\nPrimary School. Ash Field Academy, Keyham Lodge School and Millgate School all offer\nSEN provision and are rated \u2018outstanding\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary\nschool pupils there are plenty of popular comprehensive schools in the city, as\nwell as a number of independent\noptions<\/a>. Babington Academy, Rushey Mead Academy, Sir Jonathan North Girls\nCollege and Soar Valley College all come highly recommended. When it comes to\nfurther education there are also a number of sixth form colleges locally\nalongside Leicester College<\/a>, one\nof the largest further education colleges in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leicester is also\nprivy to two highly rated universities; the University\nof Leicester<\/a> and De Montford\nUniversity<\/a>. Coventry University and the University of Warwick (the 9th<\/sup>\nbest in the UK) are within easy reach too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Residents of Leicester\nhave a great range of amenities and leisure activities right on their doorstep.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extensive Highcross Shopping Complex<\/a> is\nhome to around 80 high street shops, a range of eateries, a cinema, indoor\nclimbing centre, adventure golf facilities and gym and The\nLanes<\/a> and Leicester\u2019s impressive indoor and outdoor market<\/a> host an exciting array of\nindependent retailers. Foodies are spoilt for choice too. Leicester offers everything\nfrom award-winning Asian cuisine like Kayal<\/a>\nto South American favourite Bodega Cantina<\/a>,\na taste of Tuscany at OGGI<\/a>\nand quirky pubs like the Queen\nof Bradgate<\/a> to the new Lane7<\/a>\ndining, bowling, ping-pong, pool and karaoke venue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous for its Premier League football club Leicester City (aka The\nFoxes<\/em>), Premiership Rugby side Leicester Tigers, and the oldest basketball\nclub in Britain \u2013 Leicester Riders \u2013 the city has plenty\nof sports facilities on offer for fans and participants alike. The Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre<\/a> for canoeing,\nclimbing, archery, orienteering and ziplining and the Boost\nTrampoline Park<\/a> are both popular with all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urban Leicester\nalso has a number of parks\nand outdoor spaces<\/a> on offer, including charming riverside Abbey Park, the\ntranquil Castle Gardens, 69 Acre Victoria Park and wildlife reserve Aylestone\nMeadows. Leicester\u2019s proud heritage is also on show at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery<\/a>,\n14th<\/sup> century Leicester\nGuildhall<\/a>, the Bradgate Park<\/a>\nestate and Leicester Cathedral<\/a>\nwhich dates back over 900 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Multi-cultural Leicester has plenty going on year-round to appeal to its\nvarious residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Leicester Diwali (festival of light) celebrations<\/a> are some\nof the largest in the world, the long-running Comedy\nFestival<\/a> is not to be missed\nand the family-friendly Riverside Festival<\/a>\noffers plenty of live music and entertainment, street markets and a narrow boat\nrally each June. There are also plenty of festive favourites like the grotto,\nice rink and outdoor film screenings in the run up to Christmas<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture vultures\nwill enjoy an impressive selection of theatres, galleries, and live venues in\nthe city as well. The Little\nTheatre<\/a> hosts some big name local and international talent, the uniquely\ndesigned Curve<\/a> theatre offers a\nfully immersive experience not to be missed, independent cinema The Phoenix<\/a> offers a wide range of\nscreenings and digital showcases and De\nMontford Hall<\/a> is the place to be for live music and entertainment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Crime rates in\nLeicester are average for cities of its size in the UK according to the latest police reports<\/a>. The city falls under\nthe Leicestershire Police<\/a>, which has\nits own dedicated\nneighbourhood team<\/a> in the city working in conjunction with the local\ncouncil and other agencies via the Safer\nLeicester Partnership<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also several\ncommunity led Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes in place across Leicester.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
