Welcome to the sumptuous, upper\ncrust world of period drama Downton Abbey, created by Julian Fellowes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home to the aristocratic Crawley Family \u2013\nRobert Crawley, 7<sup>th<\/sup> Earl of Grantham, his American wife Cora,\nCountess of Grantham, their three daughters Lady Mary, Edith and Sybil and frequent\nvisitor the indominable Crawley matriarch the Dowager Countess (played by Dame\nMaggie Smith) \u2013 we first encounter the owners of Downton Abbey and the various\ndomestic staff who are a part of the very fabric of the estate in 1912. There have also been a number of Christmas specials and two Downton\nAbbey follow-up films in 2019 and 2022, the most recent of which \u2013 Downton\nAbbey: A New Era \u2013 is currently in cinemas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As much a star of the show as the family\nwho inhabit it, their stunning, stately home, the eponymous Downton Abbey, is depicted\nas a country estate in Yorkshire. However,\nthe estate has existed in some form or other since 749AD and there are even\nremnants of an Iron Age Fort. From 1842-49, renowned British architect Sir\nCharles Barry \u2013 who also rebuilt the Palace of Westminster \u2013 remodelled Highclere\nPlace House into the sumptuous Jacobethan style Highclere Castle we know today\nin its 1000-acre parkland which was landscaped by Lancelot \u2018Capability\u2019 Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current Earl of Carnarvon, George\nHerbet, still lives at the property with his wife, Fiona, Lady Carnarvon. However,\nthey do decamp to a more modest cottage on the estate when the castle is open\nto the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/08\/downton.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our most expensive fantasy valuation to\ndate, 300-room Highclere Castle represents a significant piece of history, and\nthat certainly comes at a price. Indeed, the property was conservatively valued\nat \u00a3137 million in December 2021. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/inflationandpriceindices\/bulletins\/housepriceindex\/may2022\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> noting a house price increase of 3.7% between\nDecember 2021 and May 2022 (up from a rate of 9.1% to 12.8%), which means Highclere\nCastle is worth around \u00a3142,069,000 today. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the larger the home, the more\nit costs to maintain, and the Highclere Castle estate is said to cost upwards\nof <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/luxury\/society\/secrets-running-real-downton-abbey\/\">\u00a31 million<\/a> annually to run, with this fee\npredominantly covered by tourism. The house and grounds have been open to the\npublic since the 1990s, although it was the arrival of Downton Abbey which brought\nHighclere Castle to the attention of international audiences and there are a\nrange of tours that fans of the castle or the TV show can sign up for.
