In an effort to reduce our contribution to climate change, the UK’s Labour government has committed<\/a> to the previous Conservative government’s 2020 pledge<\/a> to end the sale of new petrol or diesel cars after 2030. As such, all new cars and vans will need to be 100% zero emission by 2035. Doing so will see the UK become one of the fastest G7 countries to decarbonise cars and vans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst there are over 115,000 public charge points<\/a> in the UK currently, since June 2022, UK building regulations have required that most new homes and commercial buildings with parking, as well as those undergoing major renovation, are fitted with electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what does this mean for existing homeowners? Should we all be rushing out to install EV chargers to achieve the best value possible if we plan to sell our homes in future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much does\nit cost to install an EV charger at home?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to\nthe RAC<\/a>, it costs from\n\u00a3949 to install an untethered EV charge point in your home and from \u00a31,034 for\na tethered version, with installation and connection to the electricity grid taking\naround 6-8 weeks. So not an inexpensive purchase, although there is an EV charge point\ngrant<\/a>\navailable to help with installation costs in some cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, not all homes will be suitable for an electric charging point. For instance if they do not have a dedicated parking space where the car can be left to charge. If this is the case, it may be useful to speak to your local authority about installing an on-street residential charging point, for which there is also a grant available. If you and your colleagues need to drive into the office, your employer may also seek a grant to install EV charging points onsite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much does\nit cost to charge an electric car at home?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite generally being more expensive to purchase than petrol or diesel models, an electric car will save you money in the long run since you will no longer be purchasing fuel, quite apart from reducing your carbon footprint. As their popularity grows and more models hit the market, prices are also coming down and some manufacturers offer the incentive of a free wall box for home charging when you purchase their cars, saving you anywhere from \u00a3800 – \u00a31,500. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an effort to encourage the switch over to electric vehicles the government has also introduced the Electric Car Grant (ECG), which provides a discount on the purchase price of eligible new electric cars. You do not need to apply for the grant yourself; where a vehicle is eligible, the seller applies the grant as a reduction in the purchase price. According to Pod Point<\/a>, the cost of a full charge for a typical electric car is now around \u00a317\u2013\u00a325 at home (based on average electricity prices of roughly 30\u201335p\/kWh in 2026). This compares with significantly higher costs at rapid public chargers, which can exceed 70\u201385p\/kWh at motorway service stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, charging an electric vehicle will still be a noticeable addition to household electricity use. For that reason, it remains important to shop around for competitive tariffs – particularly EV-specific or off-peak rates – to keep costs down. So, how much value\ncan an electric vehicle charger add to your home?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a more recent phenomenon, there isn\u2019t a huge amount of data available yet when it comes to the value prospective homeowners place on at home EV charge points. However, early figures have suggested having one can add around 13% to the overall value of your home and the National Association of Property Buyers<\/a> estimate the gains to be around \u00a33,000 to \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homeowners\nAlliance<\/a> also\nnoted a 91% increase in electric vehicle searches in the early days of the fuel\ncrisis in the winter of 2021, and with interest steadily increasing the closer we\nmove to the 2030 deadline, installing an EV charge point at home might not just\nbe an exercise in cost-saving, conveniency and reducing your carbon footprint\ntoday, but a prudent investment in your home when it comes to its future resale\nvalue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
