{"id":3693,"date":"2026-05-22T06:21:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T06:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/?p=3693"},"modified":"2026-05-22T12:31:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:31:45","slug":"fantasy-valuation-no-10-downing-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dy36.stage.yopa-dev.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/fantasy-valuation-no-10-downing-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Fantasy Valuation: No.10 Downing Street"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our next\nproperty in the fantasy valuation series is one of the most famous addresses in\nthe UK and home to its most prominent resident: No.10 Downing Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the\nCity of Westminster in Central London, No.10 Downing Street has been the official\nresidence of the incumbent First Lord of the Treasury \u2013 more commonly known as\nthe Prime Minister of the United Kingdom today \u2013 since 1735. Alongside the adjacent\nCabinet Office at 70 Whitehall and the Houses of Parliament a few moments\u2019 walk\naway, \u201cNo.10\u201d is considered the headquarters of the UK Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, the\nWestminster area has long been a settlement of political and religious power\nand influence dating back to the Roman era, particularly with the introduction\nof nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/\">Westminster Abbey<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/visiting\/\">Palace\nof Westminster<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original townhouse at No.10 Downing Street which now houses the Prime Minister dates back to 1682. It was commissioned by soldier and diplomat Sir George Downing, a landowner of considerable means who had acquired the land with a view to creating a cul-de-sac of terraced townhouses, to be leased to \u201c<em>Persons of Honour and Quality<\/em>\u201d. The buildings were designed by famed architect Sir Christopher Wren who designed the iconic 17<sup>th<\/sup> century version of St Paul\u2019s Cathedral that we know today, although the quality of the Downing Street build has been criticised \u2013 perhaps most vociferously by Winston Churchill! Indeed, many Prime Ministers up until the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century preferred to remain living in their existing homes whilst in office and use No.10 for formal occasions only. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Tony Blair took office in 1997, Prime Ministers and their families have also generally chosen to live in the larger, four-bedroom apartment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/history\/11-downing-street\">No. 11 Downing Street<\/a>. No.11 Downing Street is officially the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, although the Chancellor usually swaps with the Prime Minister to take the smaller residential apartment in Number 10 or remains in their own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10-downing-street.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10-downing-street.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10-downing-street-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10-downing-street-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10-downing-street-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 20 or so\ntownhouses created by George Downing, only the renumbered buildings 9-12\nremain, with others being demolished over time to create the likes of the Privy\nCouncil Office, Board of Trade and Treasury offices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst it may appear quite modest from the front, the residence which the Prime Minster calls home was merged with a much larger building behind it and a cottage to the left in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century. Much of No.12 Downing Street, the traditional home of the Chief Whip, has also been subsumed into No.10 to become the Prime Minister\u2019s press office. Today, No.10 includes a maze of corridors and over 100 rooms said to cover around 3,800 square feet of floor space. This includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/u\/0\/story\/twXxuEIPr4FZJA\">Cabinet Room<\/a> where the Prime Minister has weekly meetings with their team to discuss domestic and foreign affairs and important legislation and the State Dining Room where the Prime Minister entertains dignitaries from all over the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst Downing\nStreet was always fairly accessible to the general public in years gone by, the\nthreat from terrorist factions in the 1980s when Margaret Thatcher was Prime\nMinister led to the installation of guarded gates at either end of Downing\nStreet. These were followed by guardhouses staffed by armed police officers and\nother additional covert security measures in 1991 after a mortar shell was\nlaunched at Number 10 by the Provisional IRA whilst Prime Minister John Major\nand his Cabinet were in the building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of our most expensive valuations, No.10 Downing Street, like the rest of the street on which it sits, is owned by the UK Government. It is therefore unlikely to ever come up for sale on the open market, given its significance as the Prime Minister\u2019s official residence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a conservative valuation of the property was suggested as \u00a35.3 million in December 2019 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idealhome.co.uk\/news\/estimated-value-of-10-downing-street-239874\">Ideal Home<\/a>. Accounting for house price inflation since then would mean that 10 Downing Street would be worth in the region of \u00a36 million today as a standalone property. Given its political and cultural significance though, the property would likely sell for significantly more than this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you wanted to be neighbours with the Prime Minister, you would definitely need deep pockets.
