{"id":3762,"date":"2022-11-28T11:06:10","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T11:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/?p=3762"},"modified":"2022-11-28T11:06:10","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T11:06:10","slug":"fantasy-valuation-the-travel-book-co-from-notting-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dy36.stage.yopa-dev.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/fantasy-valuation-the-travel-book-co-from-notting-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"Fantasy Valuation: The Travel Book Co. from Notting Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next up in the fantasy valuation series is the setting for one of the capital\u2019s most famous romcoms: <em>Notting Hill<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you are a fan of Richard Curtis\u2019\npopular nineties love story between London bookshop owner and everyman Willam Thacker\nand glamourous Hollywood film star Anna Scott, or the vibrant district in\nKensington and Chelsea which shares its name, Notting Hill needs little\nintroduction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Filming for Anna (Julia Roberts) and\nWill\u2019s (Hugh Grant) first and subsequent encounters at Will\u2019s bookshop \u2013 <em>The\nTravel Book Co.<\/em> \u2013 took place in the heart of the upmarket West London\nenclave on Portobello Road, which is also home to the well-known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portobelloroad.co.uk\/the-market\/\">market<\/a>\nof the same name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And who could forget those famous lines uttered amongst the shelves: <em>\u201cI&#8217;m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, Will\u2019s bookshop was based on a real-life Notting Hill institution called <em>The Travel Bookshop<\/em> which was located at 13 Blenheim Crescent. <em>The Travel Bookshop was<\/em> a regular haunt of screenwriter and Notting Hill local Richard Curtis although it is now under new ownership and has been renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenottinghillbookshop.co.uk\/\"><em>The Notting Hill Bookshop<\/em><\/a>. The flat above the shop sold for a cool \u00a31,450,000 in August 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the location for <em>The Travel\nBook Co.<\/em> in the film was 142 Portobello Road, which is now a gift shop that\npays homage to its famous bibliophile roots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst the giftshop itself is not for sale, it is possible to live in the same building since there is a three-storey, three-bedroom flat with a charming roof terrace located above the shop. Although like most properties in London, you would need deep pockets if you wanted to buy it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2022\/11\/notting-hill.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much would this flat set you back\nyou might wonder? Well handily we can let you know, since the flat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightmove.co.uk\/properties\/127612208\">came onto the market<\/a> on a leasehold basis in September 2022 for the wallet\nstraining price of \u00a32,375,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, this is a bargain in\ncomparison to Will\u2019s own \u2018humble\u2019 abode in the film, with its famous blue front\ndoor and clothes averse Welsh lodger, which would set you back a good deal more\nwere it to come onto the market today. Richard Curtis chose to take work home\nwith him quite literally during filming by using his own property at the time \u2013\n280 Westbourne Park Road \u2013 as the location for Will\u2019s house in <em>Notting Hill<\/em>.\nHandily, it is only 4 minutes\u2019 walk from <em>The Travel Book Co.<\/em> location at\n142 Portobello Road, although convenience certainly comes at a cost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three-bedroom terraced house sold\nmost recently in June 2014 for a cool \u00a34,575,000 and is valued at around \u00a36\nmillion today according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoopla.co.uk\/property\/uprn\/217092021\/\">Zoopla<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mouseprice.com\/\">Mouseprice<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still soak up the Notting Hill vibe for (slightly!) less though. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightmove.co.uk\/house-prices\/notting-hill.html\">Rightmove<\/a> the average property price in the district over the last 12 months was \u00a31,608,526 and rental prices start at \u00a31,175 per calendar month for a studio flat.
