If you\u2019re buying a home today, the amount of stamp duty tax you\u2019ll pay is likely to be higher than it would have been before 1 April 2025 – thanks to lower tax-free thresholds and reduced first-time buyer relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the current stamp duty rates<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stamp duty rates right now <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The amount of stamp duty that needs to be paid depends on the property\u2019s purchase price, whether it is a residential or non-residential property, if the buyer owns any other properties and whether they are a UK national. There is also relief and\/or exemptions<\/a> for the likes of charities, local authorities and employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stamp duty is calculated on a sliding scale, meaning you pay different rates on different portions of the property price – not a flat rate on the whole amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to 1 April 2025, homes costing less than \u00a3250,000 were\nexempt from stamp duty. This threshold has now been lowered to \u00a3125,000, or \u00a3150,000\nfor non-residential or mixed-use properties. The first-time buyer threshold also\ndropped from \u00a3425,000 to \u00a3300,000 on 1 April 2025 and the maximum property\nprice for first-time buyer relief fell from \u00a3625,000 to \u00a3500,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
